2018 Duck Season Arrangements

Duck season arrangements announced

The Wildlife (Game) Regulations 2012 set out that the annual duck hunting season opens on the third Saturday in March and closes on the second Monday in June, each year.  The regulations also set the daily bag limits and hunting methods.  However, under the Wildlife Act 1975, the Minister can vary the hunting arrangements.

The relevant ministers have agreed on the arrangements for the 2018 duck hunting season.

For 2018, the season will be of normal length and bag limit, however, the hunting of Blue-winged Shoveler will not be permitted. The start time for the opening Saturday will be the same across the whole state of Victoria with hunting commencing at 9.00 am on the opening Saturday (17 March). The hunting start time for the Sunday (18 March) will be 8.00 am across the whole state.

New regulations

Regulations will be introduced to formalise what is already standard practice for responsible hunters.

Hunters will now be required to retrieve all game ducks they shoot and harvest and will be required to at least salvage the breast meat from a duck to ensure that harvested game is not wasted.

Other arrangements

All other arrangements remain unchanged.

Hunters are reminded that only non-toxic shot can be used to hunt ducks anywhere in Victoria.

Please return to the GMA website closer to the beginning of the season to see if wetlands have been closed to hunting.

Further information on having a successful season can be found here and hunters are reminded to hunt responsibly at all times.
